of word elements and word structure in relation to

animal body systems.

 

Veterinary Pharmacology

Familiarization with drugs, both generic an brand

names, used in veterinary medicine and their use, side

effects and dosage forms.

 

Commonly-Seen Conditions/

Diseases of Cats and Dogs

Develop an understanding of the history, the

predisposing factors, the clinical signs, the treatment

and cost, and the prognosis of commonly seen

conditions and/or diseases which affect dogs and cats.

The course is taught on a body system basis.

 

Viral Diseases of the Cat

Focuses on the important viral diseases of cats: the clinical signs, treatment and prevention medical terminology and the body systems affected.

 

Viral Diseases of the Dog

Focuses on the important viral diseases of dogs: accurate history collection, predisposing factors, clinical signs, treatment.

 

Internal and External Parasites

Familiarization with the appearance, life cycle, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the internal an external parasites of cats and dogs.

 

Small Animal Restraint

Techniques and devices currently used to restrain, and handle cats, dogs, birds, small mammals and reptiles.

 

Small Animal Zoonoses

An introduction to the diseases that affect cats and dogs and the diseases which can be spread to humans. The emphases is on preventative measures and recognition of the clinical signs of these diseases in humans and pets.

 

Veterinary Office Procedures

Students will learn the day-to-day operations of a veterinary office, its functions and systems. Role-playing will form a major part of the teaching technique.

 

Basic Veterinary Assisting Clinical Procedures

Student will become familiar with daily procedures common to most modern veterinary hospitals, clinics, pet stores and humane societies.

 Introduction to Accounting

Using a "hands-on" approach, students will learn both manual and computerized accounting procedures.

 

Database

Creating and maintaining databases as well as producing reports using industry standard software.

 

Additional Requirements

As well as required courses, students must complete the Essential Career Skills

· Workers in this occupational category commonly work indoors as well as outside.

· Most work 37.5 to 40 hours per week

· The majority work full time (70%), although part time opportunities are available
